Rwanda Smiles is an innovative collaboration between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Rwanda, and two leading cleft care charities in the world, Smile Train and Operation Smile. This collaboration will ensure that every Rwandan born with a cleft lip or palate will have the opportunity to receive free, life-changing surgery and the chance to live a healthy, dignified and productive life.
The organizations will treat the estimated backlog of 4,000 Rwandans suffering with unrepaired clefts and build local capacity to provide free, ongoing cleft care to the 250-300 babies expected to be born with clefts each year. To this end, the Ministry of Health has appointed three of Rwanda’s hospitals to be transformed into treatment facilities for the provision of ongoing cleft surgery and care. Operation Smile and Smile Train will also create and provide medical education and training programs tailored to develop the skill levels of medical professionals in Rwanda in the area of cleft care.
The Rwanda Smiles collaboration will create more opportunities for efficiency and treatment by utilizing both organizations’ networks of doctors and other medical professionals to train local health professionals in Rwanda who will continue the work for many years to come.
